I admit it. I missed her. I had not visited since Katrina in '05. When some friends suggested we meet there, it was a must.
I flew from John Wayne Airport through Dallas to New Orleans. Had a mini layover in Dallas. Imagine my delight when we parked at gate C2, I disembarked, and there were huge big girl rocking chairs. What fun! I enjoyed a few minutes of rocking. Then, off to visit book stores to see what is selling right now. Everyone had a nice hello or greeting. Welcome to Dallas.
Found the lovely Cafe Amelie on Royal Street while seeking out unusual food and art and those spots of magic you only find in a city called New Orleans. Dined on a cold beet salad with walnuts and corn and sweet grits with shrimp. Yummy.
A local artist told us that post-Katrina, 300 new restaurants are open. Food is alive and well in the Crescent City.
How do the locals stay cool in the intense heat of summer? By drinking cool beverages-I was introduced to a Watermelon Gimlet and enjoyed an Orange Blossom-champagne with elderflower and a hint of orange. I certainly felt cooler!
Enjoyed the best jazz by a group of students playing on the street.
Here's to great food, authentic jazz, rocking chairs, and gentility!
