Winter Solstice

Happy Winter Solstice!

image

December 21st is the Winter Solstice, is the shortest day of the year. From now on, every day will have more sunlight in the northern hemisphere, which makes me happy. There’s more time to get outside, walk and breathe fresh air, the longer the days are.

This year, it also happens to be the start of Chanukah, the Festival of Lights. Happy Chanukah to all who celebrate.

As a young child, I remember getting a gift every one of the eight nights of Chanukah. One year, that I always remembered, I got a set of dolls from Lil Abner. It made a big impression, and I was so excited to get to open one each night. But, it was also always sort of confusing because other kids had a Christmas tree and festivities associated with Christmas that we didn’t have. It was easy to feel left out as a kid.

But, I had an aunt who converted to Christianity when she got married to my uncle who died before I was born, and my aunt always had a Christmas tree. We had Christmas dinner at her house every year, and I always got a Christmas stocking with candy canes, walnuts, and other goodies, until I was eight. Then, we started traveling at Christmas, which was great. For many years, we went to Mexico, mostly Puerto Vallarta, and had a Mexican feast, with music, piñatas with bubble gum and candy, and Orange Fanta from the bar. When I got a little older, we had frozen daiquiris! Still illegal in the United States at that age, but not there!

My parents, aunt and uncle and all the kids went together and sometimes, other family and friends came too. And we made new friends, who met back there each year. It was a great experience for a kid. We’d go horseback riding, lay on the beach, party, and learn about the culture, and it was a lot easier to enjoy the season for us there.

At some point, I started getting really sick each year, and finally I refused to go, so instead, we went to Tahiti when I was fifteen. Then Hawaii became our holiday spot of choice. I was one very lucky kid.

I hope you have good holiday memories too. If not, why not make some this year!

Happy Holidays!
