When Do You Get to Enjoy Life? (Go for happy!

In Episode 5 of the Books Business Abundance Podcast, Chellie Campbell talks about her process for writing, how she turned a “No” into a "Yes” to get a traditional publishing deal, and how to have more fun and enjoy your business, which I believe is vital to business success. Here's what she had to say on the subject:

Chellie: “Forget about all the success the clothes and the car and the big venues, the fame, and all that stuff go for happy first. You better have work that makes you happy to work in it because look, life is short, it’s really short, and people work too much, let alone a 40-hour work week. And people are doing 60 hours, 80 hours; that’s all your waking life.

So, when do you get to enjoy life? When you retire? Let me give the statistics on that because I want your people to know this:

70% reaches age 65, 30% die before they get there. Okay?

I’m a betting woman, I like to gamble, I play poker. I am always looking at risk reward ratio.

And here’s another statistic. Let me ask you this…

What percentage of the American public is age 65 and over?"

Ellen: "30%"

Chellie: "No 30 and 40% are the most often quoted statistics to me but the actual number is 13%"

Ellen: "Oh!"

Chellie: "Yes, and age 75 and over, it goes down to 6 ½ %"

Ellen: "Wow!"

Chellie: "So, we get all our information about money from financial planners and stockbrokers who are interested in you investing your money with them for retirement, so their game is to make you scared that you will outlive your money and all of that stuff.

If you’re looking for retirement strategies do not come to me. That is not my deal. I’m about finding work you love, working at it as much as you love to do it, but not overworking, cause then you burn out. And if you love what you do and pick the right thing, you can do it until forever."

Ellen: "I totally agree…."

Chellie: "My career was musical comedy because that was the most fun I had was being in a school play. I thought it would be great if I could do that as a profession. If I could just sing and dance for a living that would be it for me. Well then, I got a job out of Disneyland doing five shows a day, five days a week for nine months. And I realized….my acting friends

were all jealous, because I was working and acting, but I had never been more bored in my entire life. What I really loved about acting was rehearsal; rehearsal is when you’re making stuff up. You’ve got a small team of creative people, you’re having fun, you’re checking out things, you’re trying different stuff you’re laughing with each other and having a great creative event then it’s set in stone and you do endless repetition, no thanks."

Ellen: That’s exactly what happened to me in the entrepreneurial journey as well….

Chellie: "Well let me tell you how this changed for me because this Financial Stress Reduction Program…I do 2 hours a week for 8 weeks. I’ve been doing this for 28 years, okay? I do one thing, that’s it. But the way I did it was I looked at Tony Robbins and him high-fiving1,000 people in the room. Everybody’s screaming, it’s all motivational. And I went, “No, no, no, no, no” that is not my picture because that’s another acting job saying the same thing and he’s on his feet for 10 or 12 hours a day, 7 days in a row. Not my picture.

So, I wanted small mastermind groups… So, half of class is people talking about what they learned last week, and how they applied it in their lives and did they have a win? Did they have an obstacle? Okay, what’s the next piece? And every class is different because of the people in it and what they share. And of course, money is always changing, the economy is always changing so I’m emphasizing different things every time. So, it’s continually renewed and refreshed and wonderful and I don’t do too much of it.

That’s the key."
