November 1, 1787 - New York City opened the first free school for African-Americans.
November 3, 1783 - Congress discharged all soldiers who had fought in the American Revolution except those in New York City as the British had not yet evacuated after a seven year occupation.
November.5, 1852 - Abolitionist candidate, Gerrit Smith, thanked the citizens of New York for electing him.
November 5, 1872 - Susan B. Anthony voted in an election in New York, defying the law as women did not yet have the vote.
November 6, 1869 - Rutgers University beat Princeton University in the first intercollegiate football game in the U. S. The score was 6 to 4.
November 7, 1933 - Fiorello La Guardia was elected Mayor of New York City, the first of three terms. Years before, in 1907, he had been appointed an interpreter at Ellis island where immigrants arrived.
November 7, 1944 - Franklin D. Roosevelt won a fourth term as President of the United States. He was the first and only person to serve more than two terms. An amendment to the Constitution now limits holding office to two terms.
November 7, 1955 - The U.S. Supreme Court outlawed recreational facility segregation.
November 7, 1989 - Douglas Wilder was the first African-American to be elected Governor of a state. After serving as Governor of Virginia, he was elected Mayor of Richmond, VA. in 2004.
November 8, 1929 - The Museum of Modern Art opened in Manhattan.
November 9, 1854 - Elizabeth Hamilton (Mrs. Alexander Hamilton) died at age 97! She was a founder of The Orphan Asylum Society, founded in 1806. She worked tirelessly for decades for the OAS serving in various positions. Today it is Graham Windham, a child care agency. She was a prodigious fundraiser and also took some orphans into her own home.
November 9, 1965 - A blackout occurred in the northeastern U. S. More than 30 million people were without power for over 12 hours.
November 10, 1902 - The cornerstone was laid for The New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street.
November 13, 1839 - The first Anti-Slavery political party was established.
November 12, 1859 - Fredrick Douglas left Canada for a speaking tour of England about abolition. England had passed an abolition bill in 1827.
Note: I watched the Commemoration of Parliament's act on-line on the 200th anniversary of the act being passed. It was a 2 hour history lecture.
November 13, 1927 - The Holland Tunnel opened between New York and New Jersey. It was the country's first underwater car, bus and truck tunnel.
November 15, 1777 - The Continental Congress approved the Articles of Confederation, a little more than a year after the Declaration of Independence was passed.
November 15, 1787 - The genesis of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, which grew out of the Free African Society, was founded in Philadelphia by Absalom Jones.
November 15, 1940 - The Queens Midtown Tunnel opened.
November 17, 1800 - The United States Congress met in Washington, D. CO. for the first time. After the ratification of the Constitution, it met in Manhattan, then Philadelphia and finally in Washington, D.C. The Continental Congress and the Congress under the Articles of Confederation met in various locations including in a private home in Baltimore!
Shortly after, the second President and his wife, John and Abigail Adams, moved into what became known as the White House. They were the first to live there. Abigail Adams hung the laundry in the East Room!
November 22, 1774 - The Continental Congress voted to allow exports to British Bermuda as its residents were starving. In return they asked for much needed salt.
November 22, 1963 - President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. He had been elected in 1960.
November 23, 1744 - Abigail Adams was born. She was the second First Lady and the mother of the sixth President, John Quincy Adams.
November 25, 1783 - The British evacuated New York City. The Revolution was truly over although in 1812 the United States and Great Britain fought another war including over boundaries.
November 25, 1955 - Segregation was outlawed in interstate travel in the United States.
November 26, 1885 - Sojourner Truth died. She was born enslaved in 1797 and freed when she was 28 because of a New York State law which freed people when they became twenty-eight years of age. She was born Isabelle VanWagener and changed her name. She was a prominent speaker on abolition and women's rights.
November 28, 1782 - A national day of thanksgiving was ordered by the United States Congress following the end of the American Revolution and the peace treaty with England.
November 29, 1890 - The first Army-Navy game was played at West Point. The Navy won 24 to 0.
