Note:  In past Octobers, six Presidents of the United States were born, as was one First Lady, and, another First Lady died.

October 1, 1800 - Napoleon persuaded King Charles IV of Spain to cede Louisiana territory back to France. In 1803, the French government sold it to the United States during the administration of President Thomas Jefferson. The United States Senate ratified the Louisiana Purchase on October 20th, 1803.

October 1, 1924 - Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, was born.

October 1, 1945 - Sixth Avenue, in Manhattan, was renamed the Avenue of the Americas.

October 2, 1755 - Hannah Adams, a distant relative of John Adams,  was born. She wrote the first  book on American history covering the period between the landing of the Mayflower and the ratification of the Constitution: Summary History of New England, published in 1799.

October 4, 1822 - Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th President of the United States, was born.

October 4, 1864 - The New Orleans Tribune, an African-American daily newspaper was first published.

October 5, 1830 - Chester A. Arthur, the 21st President of the United States, was born.

October 6, 1978  - The United States Congress extended the deadline for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment for three years. But as no additional states ratified it, it  has not become part of the Constitution.

October 11, 1866 - Elizabeth Caty Stanton, a leader in the right to vote for women "campaign" proclaimed: "free speech, free press, free men and free trade."

October 11, 1868  - Thomas A. Edison received his first patent which was for a device which recorded votes electronically.

October 11, 1964 - The Nobel Peace Prize was bestowed on The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

October 11, 1950 - CBS broadcast the first television program in color.

October 13, 1792 - The cornerstone was laid for the White House. John and Abigail Adams were the first President and First Lady to live in it. Abigail hung the laundry in the East Room which, of course, is used for very different functions today!

October 14, 1884 - Eleanor Roosevelt, future First Lady, delegate to the United Nations, and humanitarian was born. She married her distant cousin Franklin Roosevelt. His first administration began in 1932. He was the only President to serve more than two terms, serving four. She was a neice of President Theodore Roosevelt and FDR was a cousin of Theordore Roosevelt after whom the Teddy Bear was named!

October 14, 1890 - Dwight David Eisenhower, the 34th President of the United States, was born.

October 15, 1972 - Jackie Robinson was honored at Cincinnati Stadium. On October 25, 1945  Jackie Robinson had been signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers. He died on October 24, 1972 and a biography was published on October 28, 1972.

October 17, 1956 -  Dr. Mae C. Jemison, the first African-American woman astronaut, was born. She orbited the Earth in  1992 on the space shuttle Endeavor.

October 24, 1945 - The Treaty of the United Nations entered into force, an anniversary commemorated each year when the General assembly of the  U. N.  is in session in New York City.

October 25, 1760 - King George III ascended the throne. Sixteen years later, the American Colonies declared their independence.

October 26, 1825 - The Erie Canal opened. It linked the Atlantic coast to the  Midwest, thus transforming both transportation and commerce.

October 27, 1858 - Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, was born.

October 28, 1818 -  Abigail Adams, the second First Lady, died.  She and her husband, John Adams, were the parents of the sixth President, John Quincy  Adams. She had asked Adams to burn their letters to each other, but he did not. Many have been published.

Note: I wonder what she would say! I had the honor to play her in a pageant for the 200th anniversary of George Washington's inauguration.

Note: I suggest a visit to the Mt.Vernon Hotel Museum which once was the carriage house and stable of their daughter, Abigail, called "Nabby," and her husband's on their estate which he named Mt Vernon. It is at 421 East 61st Street in Manhattan. I was a docent there once upon a time. The main house burned down. The Museum building was also a private home, hotel,

and Con Ed substation.

October 28, 1886 - The Statue of Liberty, a gift from the people of France, was dedicated in New York Harbor.

October 29, 1864 - Sojourner Truth was invited to the White House by President Abraham Lincoln. She wrote: "I never was treated by anyone with more kindness and cordately than...by that great man."

October 29, 1929 - The New York Stock Exchange crashed, beginning the "Great Depression."

October 30, 1735 - John Adams, the 2nd President of the United States, was born. He was Vice President in the administration of George Washington.

October 31, 1945 - Booker T. Washington was named to the Hall of Fame of Great Americans which is located on the grounds of Bronx Community College. He was an educator, author and orator. He headed Tuskegee Institute, (now Tuskegee University) then a teachers' college for African-Americans.  It is located in Tuskegee, Alabama. He was born in 1856, was enslaved and then freed when he was a child. He died in 1915.
